Greek Language Courses 2012 – 2013

UNHCR Cyprus would like to bring to your attention the intensive Greek language summer course at the School of Modern Greek of the University of Cyprus, in Nicosia. The summer course will run from 30 July  - 24 August 2012 and will be offered at 4 levels,  the beginners, intermediate, advanced and higher level (subject to a sufficient number of applications received for each level respectively). A total of 12 places (three places at each level) are offered free of charge for recognized refugees or subsidiary protection beneficiaries. Lessons will be held in the afternoons, daily .

Persons who have attended and completed any of the first three courses are encouraged to submit an application for the next level .

As there is usually high interest in this course and applications are examined on a "first come - first served" basis, please be advised to apply well in advance .

The School of Modern Greek has informed our office that a number of refugees who registered in previous semesters regrettably failed to show up at lessons. Due to the small number of places, you are requested to apply only if you intend to follow the course . 

Please find attached the relevant information leaflet and the application form. Please note that you will need to indicate your level of knowledge of the Greek language .

Intensive Winter Course 2012

The intensive winter course will run from 17 September 2012 until 14 December 2012. Lessons will be held in the afternoons, daily .

Winter Course 2012 - 2013 (non intensive)

The winter course will run from 17 September 2012 until 26 April 2013. Lessons will be held in the afternoons, twice a week .

Intensive Course 2013

The intensive course 2013 will run from 18 January 2013 until 26 April 2013. Lessons will be held in the afternoons, daily .

UNHCR would also like to bring to your attention that applications for the Greek language courses at the State Adult Education Centres can be submitted usually during September each year. For further information you are advised to contact the district offices early in September .

1. State Adult Education Centres  (Epimorfotika Kentra)

The Adult Education Centres offer Greek language courses free of charge to migrants and other non-Greek speaking residents of Cyprus. This program is especially geared toward persons in vulnerable social groups, who want to improve their potential for economic and employment advancement.The Education Centres operate in both urban and rural areas in the mornings, afternoons and evenings in buildings of Elementary Schools, High Schools and Technical Colleges, in all districts of Cyprus. Classes start in late October or early November and they end in May,of each school year .

1. SCHOOL OF MODERN GREEK

 

The School of Modern Greek was founded in 1998 and is currently under the aegis of the Faculty of Letters.  The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies is responsible for the structure and contents of all School programs.

 

The School aims to teach the Greek language to non-native speakers, nationals and foreigners, as well as to those who wish to perfect their knowledge of Greek. 

 

The teaching staff, has a special interest in teaching Greek as a foreign or second language since their  research work is directly related to foreign language teaching.  Thus, the School has a second major objective, which is to produce primary materials for teaching Greek. 

 

2. COURSES OFFERED

 

The School of Modern Greek offers both intensive and non-intensive courses.

 

2.1 INTENSIVE COURSES

 

There are two intensive course programs:

 

1. Intensive Summer Course, which is offered at all levels and lasts four weeks (August).

 

2. Intensive One-Semester Course, which is offered at all levels and lasts thirteen weeks (from September to December and from January to April or May).

 

2.1.1 INTENSIVE SUMMER COURSE

 

 The Intensive Summer Course is addressed to:

 

a)   Students from the European Union who wish to learn  Greek within the context of the Socrates exchange program.  It is not required that these students be enrolled in the University of Cyprus.

b)   Individuals who live in Cyprus, either on a temporary or permanent basis, and who wish to learn Greek for personal or professional reasons.

c)   People  from abroad who wish to learn or perfect their knowledge of Greek

 

 

Duration of the Course

The course lasts four weeks.  Classes are held Monday through Friday, five teaching units per day and amount to a total of 100 teaching units.

 

Levels

The Summer Course is offered at beginner and intermediate levels.  Each class has a maximum enrollment of 15-20 students.

 

2.1.2. INTENSIVE ONE SEMESTER COURSE

 

The intensive One-Semester Course is addressed primarily to individuals living in Cyprus either on a temporary or permanent basis.

 

Duration of the Course

 

The Intensive One-Semester course lasts thirteen weeks and is offered twice a year, from

September to December and from January to April/May. 

 

 

2.2 NON INTENSIVE COURSES

 

There are two non-intensive course programs:

 

1. Two-Semester Course, which lasts 26 weeks (September-May).  There are classes for beginner, intermediate, advanced and higher level students.

 

2. Special Interest Course, which lasts one month and is offered at the beginning of each term, in September and January.  It is addressed exclusively to European exchange- program students.

 

2.2.1 TWO-SEMESTER COURSE

The Two-Semester Course lasts 26 weeks, from September to May.  Classes are three teaching units long and take place twice a week, for a total of 156 teaching units.

 

Levels

Classes are offered at all levels.  The maximum enrollment in each level is approximately 15 students.

 

2.2.2 SPECIAL INTEREST COURSE

 

The Special Interest Course is addressed exclusively to European exchange program students who are studying or intend to study at the University of Cyprus.  The students are entitled to follow one month-long Special Interest course, starting at the beginning of the Fall or Spring semester.  The course runs parallel to the main curriculum at the University of Cyprus.

 


 

 

3. GENERAL INFORMATION

 

3.1 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

To enroll, prospective students must complete the application form, which may be obtained from the Secretarial Office of the School of Modern Greek.  A passport size photograph is necessary.

 

3.2 PLACEMENT TESTS

Both oral and written examinations are required for student placement.  The course instructor will set the date for these examinations

 

3.3 ACCOMODATION

The School does not offer accommodation to students.  However, students in the European exchange programs and groups of guest students can apply for housing to the Student Welfare Service of the University.

 

 

4. COURSE CONTENT

 

a.  Greek Language Courses

 

The aim of the language courses is to give students competency and basic communication skills in the Greek language corresponding to the level of their course.  This provision aims to identify difficulties foreign speakers may encounter during their daily contact with the Cyprus society, as well as to provide students with a fuller picture of the Greek language varieties.

 

b. Greek Civilization Courses

 

Greek civilization courses are comprised within the lengthier course programs, and are offered to all students from the beginner level.  They address cultural and social issues of Modern Greek society.

 

5. RECULATIONS

 

·        A teaching unit lasts fifty minutes.

·        Attendance is compulsory for all courses

·        At the completion of each course, a certificate of the School of Modern Greek is issued to all students who have attended courses regularly and successfully completed both the written and oral examination.  The certificate records the course title, course level, student attendance, total course hours and the final grade.

 

No certificate is issued to:

 

a)   Students who have not taken the final written and oral examination

b)   Students who have failed the final written and oral examination

c)   Students who have not fulfilled their financial obligations the School of Modern Greek.

 

In case of interruption of studies, a certificate of attendance recording the period/hours that the student attended the School courses may be issued on demand.

 

6. FEES

 

Tuition fees are as follows:

1)   CYP 150/250€ for the Intensive Summer Course (one month).

2)   CYP 300/500€ for the One-Semester Intensive Course (13 weeks).  For students participating in the European Union exchange programs the course is free of charge

3)   CYP 300/500€  for the Two-Semester Course (26 weeks).

 

 The following are exempted from paying fees:

a) Erasmus students who have enrolled and are attending classes at the University of Cyprus

b) Members of the academic and administrative staff of the University of Cyprus (according to Senate decisions)

c)  Students of the University of Cyprus.

d)  Turkish Cypriot

 

There are no provisions for a reduction in fees.

 

All fees are paid to the bank account of the School of Modern Greek before the beginning of courses.  Information about payment are given by the secretary of the School

 

7. FACILITIES

 

Students enrolled in the School of Modern Greek are entitled to use all the facilities of the  University of Cyprus, the athletics center, the coffee shop and the student restaurant, the computer center and the library.  Students of the School of Modern Greek are bound by the same regulations as the students of the University of Cyprus.

 

 

8. EUROPEAN UNION EXHANCE PROGRAMME STUDENTS

 

An intensive course (four weeks long) is especially designed for Erasmus students who are planning to attend courses at the University of Cyprus. If this course is not provided (due to the limited number of Erasmus students), exchange students from European Union member countries may enroll in any program offered by the School of Modern Greek (including the Summer intensive course) free of charge. They can also participate free of charge to all the cultural activities included in the summer intensive course or any other course of the School of Modern Greek.  Summer course is credited with  9 credits where as the  other  programs with 12 credits,  provided that a student completes the course successfully.

 

Application of Erasmus students to attend Greek language courses should reach the School of Modern Greek by 30 June every year.

 

Upon arrival in Cyprus, Erasmus students must contact the Service for Research, International and Public Relations, as well as the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service, which will assist them with accommodation, information, etc.  The Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service is the liaison office for exchange students and assists them in all aspects of their stay in Cyprus.

 

9. NON-EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES

 

Students from non-European Union Countries who wish to attend courses at the School of Modern Greek must obtain a visa from the authorities of their country.  Enrollment in the School requires prepayment of fees.

 

Certificates of enrollment are issued once the students have fulfilled their financial obligations the School of Modern Greek.
